and yet more.....

Oh yes it's like through they keyhole but if possible even less interesting.

Books_speaker

No, don't remember that awful TV programme with Lloyd Grossman the point of which was to guess the 'celebrity' from a walk around their house? I say celebrity in quotes as the only way anyone agrees to be on one of those type of programmes is for their career to be well and truly over or to be dead without anyone realising.

Anyway, yes, dark nights brings another doodle of objects around the house while listening to the Radio 4 news. This time a couple of the books that are slowly taking over every free surface, yes another candle lantern and a speaker from the mini hifi system that provides the entertainment while at the doodle desk.

By the end of this winter you should be able to recreate the whole of the interior of my house from sketches. I promise to stop doodling when it comes down to only having the sock drawer left to sketch though!

More everyday objects

Tonight it is a very late little doodle seeing as I fell asleep early in the evening!

Lantern_1

Just a quick little ink scribble of the candle lantern that sits in front of the soft pastels wooden cases. I was reading a book but as usual I was twirling a fountain pen in my fingers while reading and as the sketch books were propped up on one of the easels by the chair I found myself reaching for one of them.

Pen and ink is such a great scribbley medium that lends itself so well to rapid little sketches. You really can't beat it for messy little drawings of nothing in particular. It is also fun to just draw what is in front of you, no pondering over the subject, just draw the everyday and mundane or seemingly mundane.

No Doodling

Well it has been very quiet here of late, no posts and for the stats I see the visitors have dropped to a stunning 23 visits in 24 hours. Just how low can you go! Well, zero I guess.

No_doodling

Maybe you are just as bored with visiting the site as I am with updating it. The doodles have certainly dried up as the nights have drawn in as have the opportunities for doodles. A sea front hotel from a working trip last week would have normally made an ideal doodle subject but seeing as at this time of year all I could see was inky blackness apart from a thin line of twinkling lights in the far distance from my 'sea view' window it wasn't much of a subject. First light simply presented a thick blanket of mist. The hotel room was also stunningly uninspiring as indeed was dinner, the joys of hotel food.

Anyway, for tonight a quick scribble, the first in a week. The subject, uninterestingly, the laptop and spot I normally update the site from at home. Those two hulking things on the left hand side are two fairly large Marshall guitar amps that adorn the room.

Another Old Man

A little more of a hours sketch tonight than a quick doodle.

Old_man

As was yesterday's pencil sketch the subject is inspired by a photograph, this time found browsing the Internet. Another face that tells it's own storey.

Unfortunately the spot light has caused the graphite to shine on the bottom left bleaching out the darkness of the jacket.

Lijiang Man

A quick pencil doodle tonight.

Man_2

This evening I was flicking through Micheal Palin's Himalaya, not exactly reading it but just scanning through the photographs and happened upon the small photograph of the man in the above sketch. Something caught my eye about the image and I ended up creating a quick pencil sketch. I don't normally sketch from photographs but in the absence of any other kind of sketching this weekend this was about as close to being creative with a very small c that I have been for the last few days.

Balls!

Glass balls....

Glass_ball_1

Some days there just doesn't seem to be anything to doodle, or maybe there is but the wood is well hidden by the trees. Of course doodling for a couple of minutes with acrylics in miniature does not help the situation any, maybe I was staring at the glass ball for the subject to be revealed...didn't work!

Albert Grunthwistle - The real Guy Fawkes

It's 1605, which is just a few minutes past 4pm, the date - November the 5Th, the place - Albert Grunthwistles oldee noveltee underwear shope.

London3

The conspirators are deep in conversation - their plan to feed 36 barrels of beans to a pot bellied pig called Eric and then stow him in the cellars below the house of la de dah ponces with a candle strapped to his rump and wait for nature to take its course. Unfortunately the letter ordering the 36 barrels of beans, one candle, a pig and a quantity of leather thonging is intercepted and shown to 'does my neck look big in this rough' Jimmy and the plot is thwarted.

Commoners throughout London on the night of November 5Th 1605 light bonfires. Presumed by Jimmy to be in celebration of the uncovering of the conspiracy and of delight at the safety of their king, misses the point in that they are actually trying to burn London down in protest at plans to build The olde Millenniumee Dome which they see as a gross misuse of their money, hard earned by theft, mugging, sexual favours and other less than honest toils.

And it's all true!!

Dark Doodling

Tonight's scribble is brought to you courtesy of the letter D and the no 5.

Scribbles1

D because it's Dark and 5 because that is the time in the evening when darkness now descends due to the clocks having been moved an hour back this last weekend. All summer there has not been a single sighting of an easel in the doodle room, but suddenly now the nights have drawn in (no pun intended of course) two of the beasties have appeared which must be a sign that out door doodling is out and twiddling the thumbs indoors by an easel is in.

About

  • IISB Welcome to A Doodle A Day! Feel free to have a good look around and leave me a comment if you like what you see, or even if you don't!

A Doodle a Day is a place where I publish sketches created for fun and the love of drawing and more finished illustrations. I draw primarily with pen and ink, either dip pen or fountain pen. I do use other mediums such as watercolour, acrylics, pencil and soft pastels but my first love as a medium is pen and ink, especially dip pen.

I trained and worked for many years as a graphic designer, artist and studio manager within publishing as well taking on freelance projects. I draw for the sheer enjoyment of creating something from nothing but a white sheet of paper and a bottle of ink. I also work as an illustrator concentrating on Childrens illustration. I hope that you get as much enjoyment from seeing these sketches and illustrations as I do from creating them.

If you would like to enquire about my work or commissioning me then please contact chas@doodleaday.co.uk
