Rainy Days

A very quick little scribble tonight again of the Elephants from last weekend as it has been either raining this week or I have been back too late to get out and about for any sketching.

Elephants_3

I was getting doodle withdrawal symptoms and just needed to doodle something and what better than these magnificent creatures.

Twycross Zoo

Suffering from Ink doodle overload yet?

Well never fear back in the world of colourvision for this one. A visit to the Zoo this weekend being the inspiration for this little pastel doodle.

Heffalump_1

The last time I saw this guy was about nine or so months ago and he was tiny (for an Elephant!). He took some looking for this time as he is almost as large as the rest now but as silly as it sounds and I did get a strange look of 'you can't be serious that you can recognise a specific Elephant amongst others', but I did recognise his face or at least I think I did!

Obviously I used a photograph I took while at the Zoo as reference, pastels aren't really an in the middle of a Zoo medium.

Lastly, a photograph that I was quite pleased with the way it came out as this lady is so hard to take a photograph of as she only surfaces for a second or so at a time and normally as you hit the shutter you simply get a bur of brown and ripples.

Into_the_green_1 These Guys also always make me laugh.

What's that human doing mommy?

"Well goofball, what's today's pointless doodle", I hear you ask.

Well after my exclamation of the state of general sunshine the other day, it has of course now been raining for the last twelve hours starting with a rather smashing thunder storm this morning. Which in actuality I don't mind at all, I'm not much of a blistering heat lover and I love the sound and smell of rain.  Which hasn't answered your question at all.

Ducks_2

Anyway this evening I took a wander down to the waterways with the idea of sketching some of the very prettily painted narrow boats that are normally down there. This evening though there proved to be non, just a couple of rather dull battleship Grey painted ones, more working boats than pleasure boats. However there was a family of about nine or so ducklings with mom and dad. I kept stopping at the edge of the bank to try and sketch the ducklings who would obligingly swim towards me at the banks edge only to be hustled away by mom to the middle of the waterway while dad stayed behind giving me the beady eye until they were a little way ahead. Of course I would then walk ahead and the process would repeat. They were extremely sweet and I take my hat off to mom and dad for keeping the strange sketch book toting animal at bay. However the sketch book toting animal did manage to get a sketch!

Small Boats

Small_boats_2 When I was a child I was always doodling, When at Art College I was always doodling. At University I doodled less outside of the course work as there was beer to be drank and then later nightclubs to be worked in to make up for the grant squandered on beer. When I worked in the field I was always doodling, hardly a moment without a pen in my hand. Then a good number of years without a single doodle. I think I doodled myself out, spending all day creating finished artwork then the evening often freelancing and then doodling as well. And now..I seem to have the doodle bug again, this site is almost under threat of living up to its title! Doodles, nothing special, just doodles.

Tonight while listening to Michael Palin's Pole to Pole which has quite a nautical theme I found myself pen in hand doodling happily away using a photograph taken in Geneva Harbour a few years back as a reference. I'd forgotten just how much I enjoy doing quick little black and white simple no frills doodles.

Ink Moments - Sunny Days

Sunny_days Well I don't know what is happening but we really are in the midst of a gloriously sunny spell at the moment, Wimbledon is on which normally is the bringer of solid rain for the duration.

Anyway, just a quick little on the spot doodle, not really what I was hoping for but not much time for anything more, another little moment in time.

Rooftops & Spires

Spires_2 The previous little doodle of rooftops seemed to me to make a nice complementary alternate view of the world to the more intimate street level doodles.

This little on the spot doodle is closer to home than the previous one, back in my home town looking across the rooftops from the top level of a car park towards the cathedral.

Rooftops of Besancon

It's been pretty muggy here the last couple of days. Especially on the nights which means I end up turning this way and that trying to get to sleep but without much success.

Besancon_3

Tonight though we had a good thunderstorm which for a while at least cooled things down somewhat.

Anyway the upshot is no on the spot doodles this weekend as I've had the energy of a dead haddock that has just ridden a bicycle from Lands End to John O' Groats. However tonight while listening to Michael Palin's Hemingway Adventure and flicking through a book at the same time I found that the book marker was a photograph from a few years ago taken in Besancon and ended up doing a little doodle from the photograph.

Illustration Friday's topic of the week is 'Black & White'.

Black_and_white_2

So sticking with ink drawings which have become the norm for the last few days although a tad different approach for this, I give you the quintessential cliched English Butler and the inevitable link to a Penguin.

Feeding the Ducks

Ducks .. otherwise known as 'why is the pushchair floating in the water..but hey, can't win em all!

I've also realised that in all of these on the spot doodles so far peoples butts seem to be a prominent feature and does that make these drawings a load of old arse?!

Hope you're not bored of them because I feel a good few more of these arriving over the weeks, although Smudge tells me that he will kick my butt if he doesn't get a look in soon!

About

  • IISB Welcome to A Doodle A Day! Feel free to have a good look around and leave me a comment if you like what you see, or even if you don't!

A Doodle a Day is a place where I publish sketches created for fun and the love of drawing and more finished illustrations. I draw primarily with pen and ink, either dip pen or fountain pen. I do use other mediums such as watercolour, acrylics, pencil and soft pastels but my first love as a medium is pen and ink, especially dip pen.

I trained and worked for many years as a graphic designer, artist and studio manager within publishing as well taking on freelance projects. I draw for the sheer enjoyment of creating something from nothing but a white sheet of paper and a bottle of ink. I also work as an illustrator concentrating on Childrens illustration. I hope that you get as much enjoyment from seeing these sketches and illustrations as I do from creating them.

If you would like to enquire about my work or commissioning me then please contact chas@doodleaday.co.uk
